Hi Corri-lyn, 

I'm sorry to hear your dad has passed. I was traveling the last few 
days and intended to come see him early this week. As someone 
whose has lost a father in the not-too-distant past, I know how you 
must feel. As a colleague in ham radio with Dick, it is an event that 
makes me sad and comes as a surprise. 
When I first met Dick I immediately recognized his care-free attitude 
that sometimes appeared even a little silly to me. He told me one day 
about his career-ending injury years before and his steadfast belief 
that from that point, "every day is a freebie." Then I started to 
understand someone, who perhaps through adversity, became a 
more fully self-expressed person than most. And isn't that valuable in 
this world!
As a "people person," Dick's love for ham radio served him well, but 
not selfishly. He turned that human interest into human service and 
spent many years coming to the rescue of stranded motorists, 
accident victims, marathon runners, people made homeless by 
disaster or the fellow ham that needed help erecting a tower or setting 
up their station. I know, because I was one of those guys. 
I hadn't talked to him much lately, and I know he was having health 
problems. I know sometimes people in that situation don't need any 
outside distractions, but today I regret not bugging him. 
However you knew your dad be assured that in the community at 
large he was a volunteer who made a difference in our world and one 
who will be missed greatly by those who worked along side him and 
the strangers in the dark to whom he offered his help.
