The following describes a possible BARC activity with
application to ham radio. How many of our members would be interested
in participating?

Please reply to: "barc-list" <barc-list at mailman.qth.net> so that we

What is a Science Festival?
Science festivals are cultural events that allow communities to
celebrate science and technology. Typically, they involve the
organization of a wide range of public activities - lectures,
debates, demonstrations, exhibitions, concerts, plays, poetry
readings, etc. - in a particular community over a period of
one-to-several days. Modeled on cultural (art, music, literary)
festivals, science festivals aim to make science and technology part
of the wider culture by giving most or all sections of the community
an opportunity to participate in scientific activities at least once
a year.

Typically, science festivals work because they are highly visible
concentrations of cultural activity within the community.
Headquartered in a central and prominent place, they are
conspicuously branded and bannered; and they always include high
profile, headline-grabbing events - for example, lectures and debates
featuring particularly well-known scientists or science
communicators. However, it is of the essence of science festivals
that they embrace a large number of individually small activities.

Where have science festivals been organized?
Science festivals have proven extremely successful in several
European countries. For example, in the UK science festivals have
been started successfully in Brighton, Cardiff, Cheltenham,
Edinburgh, Newcastle and Oxford. In these places science festivals
are now as securely placed in the calendar as their older and more
familiar arts-based counterparts (e.g., the Edinburgh International
Festival; and the Cheltenham Literary Festival).

The time is ripe for science festivals in the United States (we know,
for example, that discussions are under way with a view to launching
one in New York). We aim to have the first successful American
science festival right here in Cambridge MA!

Why organize a science festival in Cambridge?
There are 5 good reasons for launching a science festival in
Cambridge:

Cambridge is a 'science city' - a very large number of extremely
successful academic and commercial institutions here are heavily
invested in science and technology, and the city has a global
reputation for its efforts in these areas

Cambridge is also a 'festival city' - a number of arts-based and
cultural festivals already flourish here, which suggests that the
city is able to support the array of diverse events that is needed to
create a festival atmosphere

Much of Cambridge's science and technology is largely or wholly
unknown to those who live and work alongside but are not
professionally involved in it - there is a great opportunity,
therefore, to reveal some of Cambridge's hidden science 'treasures'
to the wider community

Cambridge has a number of key cultural institutions (including the
Boston Museum of Science, and a number of science-based university
museums e.g., at Harvard and MIT) that could serve as venues for
particular festival activities and events
Cambridge is served by a number of 'science-friendly' media,
including newspapers and broadcasting organizations that can be
expected both to promote and to participate in a science festival
When will The Cambridge Science Festival be launched?
It is hoped that the first Cambridge Science Festival will take place
over 9 days between Saturday 21st and Sunday 29th April 2007. A
public announcement will be made shortly, and detailed planning will
commence over the summer of 2006.

How will The Cambridge Science Festival be organized?
An Honorary Advisory Board of distinguished representatives of key
Cambridge academic, civic, commercial, cultural, educational and
scientific organizations is being created. A Management Committee
will be established to oversee the detailed organization of the
Festival, and a full-time Festival Manager will be appointed. The
Festival Office will be located in the MIT Museum.

How will The Cambridge Science Festival be funded?
The Festival will be funded by a combination of charitable grants,
donations and commercial sponsorships. A detailed festival budget is
being prepared.

How will individual festival activities and events be created?
A small number of key events will be organized centrally; but the
great majority of Festival events will be organized by individual
institutions across the city that are keen to play their part. If you
would like to participate in the Cambridge Science Festival, please
let us know!

Who should be involved in The Cambridge Science Festival?
The short answer to this question is: everyone. The key to the
success of the Cambridge Science Festival is inclusion - inclusion of
all the science-based organizations in the city, inclusion of all the
key civic and community organizations in the city, and inclusion of
all sections of the community in and around the city. If you live,
work or visit here and you're interested in science - please join us!
