Thanks for the interesting post. It reminds me why I became interested in
radio!!
I was camping with my kids in a remote location on the north shore of the
St Lawrence river, for a week in mid-August, 1991. I hadn't brought along
any electronics - we played cards and read on rainy days, and I relied on
my "weather sense" for decisions. Well, one afternoon I did decide to add
a couple of extra guys to the tent because the wind was getting a bit
gusty - luckily I did that, because the remnants of Hurricane Bob came
through that night!
We were OK, and the kids stayed dry because I was fortuitously sleeping on
the windward side of the tent. When the pegs pulled out on that side, my
weight kept the tent up, although I did get rather wet being right against
the fabric.
Now I ALWAYS have my 2-meter, and check the NOAA broadcasts. I even have a
solar panel for re-charging (works for the cell phone, too, though the
phone is obviously useless in remote areas).
