To all Metro Boston ARES Members and interested parties.

Metro Boston SET Update [10-28-04/1920hrs]

The simulated Emergency Test Scheduled for Saturday October 30th will take place as planned.

The main premise of the exercise for the Metro Boston Area, as stated in the previous announcement remains unchanged. (See previous announcement below.) We will support Cape Cod and the state of NH with their exercise.

At the same time that the SET is taking place, the Red Sox Victory Celebration Parade in Boston will be held. Current estimates indicate that over 2 million people may attend and some estimates are considerably higher. The parade will begin at 10:00 am, which is the same time that the SET is scheduled to begin.

There is nothing to suspect or suggest that the event will be anything but peaceful and there are no current plans for formal ARES support.

The current plan for Metro-Boston for Saturday October r30th is as follows:

(Please keep in mind that circumstances can change on a moments notice and the current plan as stated below may change at any time up to and during the actual events on Saturday.)

Metro Boston ARES members should support the drill from their homes.

Stations participating may be asked to extend their hours of operation until the Red Sox Celebration concludes.

Homes stations are encourage to check in on 146.64 or 145.23.

Of particular interest will be NVIS operations on 40 meters into Cape Cod.

If you are mobile in the Boston area, please make sure your radio is turned on and you are monitoring.

Make sure you have an HT with you and a fully charged battery.

Past experience has shown that CELL Phone Service could be significantly compromised due to the large amount of people expected in Boston.

The Eastern Mass ARES Leadership is prepared to immediately shut down the SET should it become necessary for any reason and switch to a real time operation.

Additional information may be found on the Eastern Mass ARES Web-Site.

Participants are asked to monitor after the Parade is over in case there are any traffic issues.

Thank you for your continued support of Amateur Radio. Stay safe. Enjoy the day. Enjoy the SET. Enjoy the Red Sox Celebration! Happy Halloween.

On Saturday, October 30th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Eastern Mass ARES will conduct a limited ARES SET. The purpose of the exercise will be to support a more extensive drill which is being conducted on Cape Cod. In addition, the State of New Hampshire is also conducting their annual statewide exercise.

This is a great opportunity for Boston area hams to practice their communications skills in moving messages in and out of the Boston area and supporting our fellow hams on Cape Cod. Due to circumstances beyond their control, the scenario for Cape Cod had to change at the last moment and hence the late notice. Those with 40-meter NVIS capability are encouraged to participate and test your equipment.

Available hams in the greater Boston who are interested in participating are asked to go to the Eastern Mass ARES Web site for additional information. http://ares.ema.arrl.org/

You may also contact me directly should you have any questions. Thank you for your continued support of ARES and I look forward to hearing you on the air.
