Allied Electronics actually ISN'T out of business, though they did get 
out of consumer electronics years ago to concentrate on being a 
distributor. They were absorbed by Radio Shack for a while (some of you 
may remember the years when RS became "Allied Radio Shack", complete 
with an ARS logo), and later spun back out into a separate company. You 
can find them on the web at http://www.alliedelec.com

Lafayette is indeed long gone. I lived on Long Island for my four years 
of high school, and have fond memories of visiting their big 
headquarters store.
