Regarding interference with EKG machines,

Patient with a 3 lead heart monitor on, now doctor orders EKG, placed EKG leads
on, patient fairly still, notice "artifact" on the scope, try to troubleshoot to get clean
non-wavy display prior to printing, not being successful, fellow workmate says
the 3 lead heart monitor sometimes causes interference, the 3 lead monitor is
temporarily disconnected, to my amazement "artifact" is gone. How could a
3 lead heart monitor, which I though passively senses/receives signals from
the body (neurologically speaking lets say action potentials ) cause inteference?

  Hmmm...

If the premise behind the sign is due to equipment malfunctions caused by interference, maybe this could
be a good discussion on interference and what it can do? I occasionally see signs stating blasting, no two
way radios used beyond a certain point. I have on occasion experienced OTR drivers with many watts of
linear amp power have their CB transmissions blast through other "channels" from side bands, even hearing
CB transmissions bleed through FM radio stations from my portable radio. In the hospital environment, I've
advised many a visitor and patient in the ER not to use their cell phone because it interferes with various
electronic equipment though I've yet to actually see what the interference does.

I recently visited a building on Divinity Avenue at Harvard University and
saw a sign half way up the street saying no CB Radios may be used beyond
    that point.

I am curious what might be happening in that area that CB transmissions
would cause a problem. Is the sign CB-specific, or do they mean any
    transmissions?

    Thanks for any insight.
