Salvation Army Steps Up Relief Services in Aftermath
of Hurricane Charley
In the aftermath of Hurricane Charley, The Salvation Army is continuing to
expand its immediate relief and response services. As power returns to some
of the affected areas, communities are beginning to move from relief to
recovery. With that change comes a multitude of new needs, such as household
cleaning supplies and building materials.
For the past six days, volunteers, staff and officer personnel with The
Salvation Army have been working around the clock focusing on the immediate
life-sustaining needs of victims of Hurricane Charley. In addition, they
have been seeing to the needs of thousands of relief workers in affected
areas of Florida.
More than 40 canteens (mobile feeding units), have been serving in nine of
the most severely affected counties, including: Charlotte, DeSoto, Hardee,
Highlands, Lee, Manatee, Orange, Osceola, and Polk. The number of canteens
will increase to near 50 as equipment arrives from neighboring states.
³The Salvation Army is blessed to have a network to call upon when the need
exceeds the local ability,² said Kevin Smith, Emergency Disaster Services
Director for Florida. ³We have equipment, staff and volunteers coming from
as far as Oklahoma and Texas.²
To supplement Florida¹s base camp kitchen, another is arriving today from
Texas. These state-of-the-art 53-foot trailers equipped with a complete
commercial kitchen will enable volunteers and staff to prepare and provide
an additional 20,000 meals per day from this unit. These meals will be
transferred to the canteens and stationary feeding sites where they will be
distributed to relief workers and storm victims. This is the Texas kitchen¹s
first deployment outside of the Lone Star State.
The Salvation Army is also providing comfort stations, enabling victims to
visit a central location to receive services such as food, water, ice,
cleaning supplies and other disaster relief necessities, social service
assistance and counseling. Some comfort stations also have a shower trailer
unit assigned to it, so that residents may take a shower.
To date (August 18), more than 350 volunteers, staff and officers have been
working daily on the relief efforts and more than 103,000 meals have been
served.
