While I'm one of those who encourages Field Day as a EmComm exercise, there's
always a discussion of "what category would we score best in", and as (one of
the) resident statiscicians, I'll indulge in a little "competitive analysis"
of last year.
1) BARC's 6A was above median (14 of 34) for 6A nationally, above median (9 of
20) for Clubs in EMA, and well above median, in top third, in NE Div (29 of
102, 24th of 74 clubs); and just ahead of a fairly serious contest team in EMA
at 6A, SRG.
2) The same Qs with 300 fewer bonuses at 3A would have been 60th of 306
nationally.
3) BARC was even above median in #QSOs, 42/102 and 33/74 clubs in NE Div,
10th/20 in EMA Clubs.
4) Qs/Transmitter was LOW, 14th of 20, 157 Qs per Tx claimed. (This calculated
while counting GOTA as a TX in addition if claimed-- but not other freebies).
5) BARC Average pts/QSO was 5, very high for a x2 power multiple -- high %age
of points from Bonuses, low %age from Phone. Only N1MV had higher Pts/QSO
(6.5), again must be high % of bonuses, low %age of QSO points -- they had
even lower Qs/Tx.
Moral -- Digital and CW QSos are both faster and worth more; also both have
some gee-whiz value as demos; while phone and digital are more easily
understood demos (listen or read over shoulder).
ARRL.ORG Contest Results has Members-Only queriable database which is
downloadable, if you want to do your own analysis.
