In my understanding, AMRPnet used ax.25 packet radio as physical
layer/transport mechanism, while HSMM uses 802.11 (mostly 802.11b right
now). If you are interested in 802.11-applications in Ham Radio, mostly
using and expanding part-15 2.4 GHz WLAN cards and access points under
Part-97 (which allows you to have more power, bigger antenna, etc. but
would limit your use to what is permitted under part-97) subscribe to
the TAPR "ham-80211" reflector, at [email protected]
As for the use of IP addresses, yes they were discussing re-using the
AMPRnet addresses, since AX.25-based TCP/IP is generally less and less
used (or should I say.... dead...).

Subject: [BARC-List] Re: HSMM
I don't have any experience with AMPRnet, so I can't really comment on
that,=20
other than to say that high-speed multi-media is using mucher higher
speed=20
throughput than what I believe has been on the air before in the ham
bands=20
before. HSMM has througput rates from around 2MBpS to as much as 10 or
11=20
MBpS, I believe. =20
In a sense, perhaps this is an extension of AMPRnet(?) I think I recall
reading somewhere that AMPRnet IP addresses may used for HSMM. Doesn't
have to=20
be so from a technical perspective, as far as I know, but it may be a
good idea=20
in terms of coordination, etc. In fact, I was looking online the other
day to=20
see who coordinates AMPRnet addresses in eastern Mass., and didn't see
anyone=20
listed -- just western Mass.
As I said, I'm no expert. I've only dabbled in packet, but am intrigued
with=20
the idea of taking wireless LAN equipment and seeing how it could be
brought=20
into the world of hamming to create really high speed digital
capabilities. If=20
nothing else, maybe I can finally can get a microwave band multiplier!
:-)=20
Given how many computer-literate hams live in the Boston area, I figure
there=20
must be some people out there who would like to explore this further.
I'll let=20
you know if I set anything up, but I'm sure I'll be looking for others
to link=20
with if I do.
Thanks -- and feel free to shed more light on AMPRnet, as I admit I
really know=20
almost nothing about it.
