[BARC-List] Severe weather via non-voice modes?

Actually, after re-reading your original question, I think that we gave
you a lot of information but we didn't give you an answer...
In short, I propagate the NWS warnings from the APRS-IS to the local
APRS RF network, which can be copied over a large part of New England
thanks to the digi structure. Note however, that my transmissions aren't
99.999% reliable either, and always subject to:
- my Verizon DSL connection
- the state of my local WLAN (which needs to be up and running)
- the state of my computers (sometimes things crash, sometimes I'm off
the air for "maintenance")
- whether my packets make it over the closest repeater (collisions, etc)

On the other hand, since you're looking for an ADDITIONAL information
source, the total reliability of the "NWS paging system" goes up...
(Little's Law for any of you statisticians out there)

So in short, do what I wrote in my previous email with the difference
that you need to get your info stream from you TNC (with radio listening
at 144.390) instead of your internet connection...

Subject: [BARC-List] Severe weather via non-voice modes?

I have a little UNIX script which goes out to a wx service web site and
periodically checks the Taunton warnings for changes. If the text does
change, I get a page of the new alert. Sometimes, though, routers or
web sites break, meaning I may lose out on updated info.

Is there an amateur service, maybe packet-oriented, where I could
capture updated warnings via a radio link at home? I'll find a way to
get myself paged from there.

I know weather radios exist, but I'd rather not carry around a wx alert
on my belt (I have enough stuff on my belt as-is!)

As an FYI, I live in an apartment and cannot put anything outside the
windows :-(

Thanks for any leads.

Scott, WY1Z
