I know it's now old news, but I just wanted you to know that the efforts of
those Boston SATERN/EDS volunteers who responded on short notice, and went
to the massive RI fire scene, were noted and appreciated. It goes without
saying that the RI/CT SATERN/EDS groups, who served meals continuously until
the very end, was thanked individually by all those firefighters and
emergency response crews at the scene. The NY Press Release below
illustrates the strong unselfish commitment of all SA volunteers, not only
in serving their own communities, but to quickly rally and support any group
in need.
"Why don't you join us?"

The Salvation Army Serves at the Scene of Rhode Island Fire
On Friday, November 14, winds up to 45 mph quickly spread a fire in an
abandoned textile mill in Pawtucket to homes within a 10-block radius.
The heavy winds blew embers through the air, igniting homes and buildings
for ten blocks. Fire crews from 23 communities were called upon to control
the fire. At least 13 houses were destroyed, and five people suffered major
injuries.
The Salvation Army of Providence, RI rushed to the scene of the raging fire
with two canteens (mobile feeding units) to offer support to rescue
workers.
Within a few hours, two additional canteens were on the scene from Boston,
Massachusetts and one from New London, Connecticut. Salvation Army
officers, employees and volunteers provided much needed food and beverages
to the thirsty and tired firemen.
The Salvation Army also worked with The Red Cross to set up a shelter for
displaced families at a nearby junior high school. By 9 p.m. Friday, nearly
60 people had checked into the shelter.

The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) is always in need of
volunteers to assist in emergency scene's like that mentioned above. Most
important, there is the need for volunteers who could be called to help when
there is an emergency in or near their home town. There is no need for all
volunteer's to travel into Boston. EDS is attempting to establish three
phone lists of volunteers of those willing to: 1) respond directly to the
scene from home, 2) those willing to actively engage in serious training to
be a primary responder, answering the calls of local fire departments for
hydration relief by driving/working one of the canteens, and 3) those hams
interested in becoming members of SATERN (Salvation Army Team Emergency
Radio Network) to assist the Salvation Army in building and maintaining a
trained cadre of hams to provide Emergency Communications for the Salvation
Army. The Mass. Salvation Army maintains two Emergency EOC's, downtown
Boston and a backup at their camp in Sharon.
