SALVATION ARMY PROVIDED RELIEF DURING
EAST COAST POWER OUTAGE
The Salvation Army responded immediately after a power outage affected
millions of people throughout the U.S. Northeast and Southern Canada.
The Salvation Army provided emergency relief services, giving countless
people relief from the heat and offering a respite to weary, delayed
travelers.
In New York City, N.Y., Salvation Army personnel setup feeding sites on
the streets. These were utilized by commuters stranded due to the power
outage along with transit staff, the New York Police Department (NYPD)
and New York Fire personnel working to maintain order during the crisis.
In addition, NYPD officers escorted Salvation Army emergency response
vehicles (canteens) through the city's massive traffic jam so they could
deliver food to 11 shelter sites established throughout the city.
In response to the thousands of New Jersey residents stranded in New
York during the blackout, The Salvation Army provided an oasis in the
Meadowland for those being transported by emergency buses. Over 3,200
hot, tired and hungry passengers were greeted by a Salvation Army
canteen manned by Salvation Army s (pastors) and volunteers, serving
cold beverages and snacks.
"I feel gratified and blessed that we were able to help in the midst of
this crisis, easing the stress, worry and physical discomforts these
people suffered," said Major Raphael Jackson, in charge of The Salvation
Army's emergency response efforts in New Jersey. "The Salvation Army is
always ready to lend a hand during emergency situations, regardless of
the magnitude."
