Hello to all,
As you know, we will try running the SWAT Net on simplex on some nights.
Here's how they do it in Worcester.

> Dan,
>
> I spoke to you briefly on Sunday. I am the RACES Radio Officer for the
> City of Worcester as well as the ARES EC. I manage a newly organized
> volunteer group called Worcester Emergency Communications Team (WECT)
> which handles emergency amateur radio communications for the City. We
> report up to the City EMA Director.
>
> As part of our team's training, we hold a weekly Simplex Net on 147.525
> MHz on Monday evenings at 8:00 p.m. I manage this Net along with Charles
> Lord, N1WAS, ARES Net Manager for the Central Mass. Two Meter Traffic
> Net on 146.970 (nightly at 9 p.m.) Charles runs the Simplex Net 2-3
> times per month as our Anchor Net Control Station. He is extremely
> experienced as a Net Manager and as an NCS. He tries different exercises
> on different nets with the checkins. For example, he will send checkins
> off to other simplex frequencies to pass traffic and have them report
> back to the primary frequency. He also sends traffic for all checkins to
> copy with several embedded errors and then goes down the roster of
> checkins asking them to critique the traffic.
>
> We also pass the mic. to other operators to give them an opportunity to
> be cross trained by running the net on the remaining nights of the month
> that Charles does not serve as NCS. I have enclosed a copy of our
> standard script for your reference.
>
> Also, in terms of checkins we encourage them from the surrounding
> communities as well as within the city limits of Worcester. We have
> check ins who have been relayed in from Framingham, Pepperell, New
> Braintree and Douglas, MA. Some of these towns are 20-30 miles outside
> of the city.
>
> Once a month or more, we run the Net from the EOC's station in order to
> test the equipment. We tend to hear most stations who check in
> particularly when we operate the 2 meter emergency station at the
> Worcester EOC. At the EOC we have a dedicated 2 meter Yaesu, FT-2600
> radio, running 60 watts. The EOC is located at an approximate height of
> 800 feet above sea level and that helps us too. We use a Diamond V-2000
> Tri-band vertical, which was donated to us, as our antenna.
>
> For those stations, whom we do not hear, the NCS, as you will see on
> the script, calls outlying stations who have checked in, to call the Net
> from their station, and retrieve other outlying stations through
> relays.
>
> Hopefully, the information I am providing you will help your group to
> develop and refine a simplex net of your own. If I can be of any further
> assistance, feel free to contact me.
>
> Thanks.
