Hi everyone,
Thanks for the great responses! You are all tremendously helpful, and
I'm really glad I'm a new BARC member. Since everyone agreed that I was
having a power supply problem yesterday, I decided to tackle it
immediately.
I already have a radio shack 3 amp regulated 13.8v DC power supply on
hand; so last night I went out and bought a dc power cable with a car
lighter attachment on one end and the appropriate 4mm plug for my vx-150
on the other end-and it worked.
Now I can definitely access the BARC repeater and apparently reach
Waltham o.k. since I was able to check into the Heavy Hitters Traffic
Net, however, I noticed that when I did a rig test on full (5w) power to
the BARC repeater that my signal had a lot of static in it when I
listened on my other h/t. On 2w it seemed better.
I assume that this is because, as I believe one of you said, my h/t
probably isn't built to operate on line power, and at 13.8v (confirmed
on the vx-150's battery check setting), it's getting too much to
handle-although I assume it's only getting it at the 1.5 amps of current
it can deal with. I was wonder if I got an adapter that would just feed
the unit 12.5 volts, if that would solve the static problem? (Then I
might not have enough power to hit the Waltham repeater anymore without
a better antenna, but I can live with that for now.)
The gel cell idea sounded interesting, but I wasn't sure how I would use
them with this particular rig. I will look into it.
