GOV. SHAHEEN PROCLAIMS JUNE AMATEUR RADIO MONTH

CONCORD, N.H. - Gov. Jeanne Shaheen has proclaimed June as Amateur
Radio Month, saluting the volunteer emergency and public service
communications contributions of New Hampshire's 5,000 Amateur Radio
operators.

Each New Hampshire governor since 1985 has recognized by proclamation
the third week of June as Amateur Radio Week. Gov. Shaheen has
elected to expand recognition from the single week to the whole month
of June, in part because of the exemplary response by the state's
Amateur Radio operators in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Gov. Shaheen on March 20 of this year presented a citation to Kim and
Steven Merrill of Dover, who responded to a request for Amateur Radio
volunteers in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attack in New
York City. Al Shuman the N.H. section manager for the American Radio
Relay League (ARRL) said, "I was pleased to have been part of the
citation ceremonies for the Kim and Steve Merrill. It is important to
note also that many other Amateur Radio operators from across the
country responded to the call of Sept. 11, including a number of
other Amateur Radio operators from New Hampshire."

The month of June is time for a number of activities by the state's
Amateur Radio community, including its signature emergency
preparedness event known as "Field Day Weekend," June 22-23. New
Hampshire Amateur Radio operators join thousands of other amateurs
throughout the United States in sharpening their operating skills
under emergency conditions.

Amateur Radio operators also provide volunteer public safety
communications to the many walks and Bike-a-thons by non-profit
public organizations held each year held around the state in addition
to working closely with the N.H. Office of Emergency Management
(NHOEM) and Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD).
