Subject: Field Radio Training Opportunity Saturday June 28.
To: Bill Kumpe <billkumpe at gmail.com>
Saturday, June 28, 2025 from 9:30 AM until 12:30 PM I will be operating a
“field day” amateur radio station on the grounds of Trinity Lutheran
Church, 5750 South Elm, Broken Arrow. I will be set up in the wooded park-like
area to the rear of the property.
Twice per year amateur radio operators around the US set up field
radio stations
and practice emergency radio communications. Many of the people
participating in field day are the same volunteer radio operators who serve
as storm spotters and set up emergency stations in cooperation with local,
regional and national authorities during natural disasters and other
emergencies.
This is an excellent opportunity for people who may be interested in
amateur radio to test the water. They can operate the station under the
control operator’s supervision and see if it is something they would like
to pursue. Well behaved children over ten or so are welcome under parental
supervision.
This is also an excellent opportunity for amateur radio operators who do
not have a field rig to get a little experience in this area of the hobby.
For amateur radio operators wishing to contact this station the event call
sign will be K5Z. I will be operating (a) 20, 15 and 10 meters HF SSB,
frequencies to be determined by conditions and traffic and (b) 2 meter VHF
probably 146.520 simplex QSY 146.430. I will also monitor the BAARC 2 meter
repeater 146.910 + 88.5 PL.
The HF radio will be a XIEGU G90 feeding a home brew field antenna. This
setup is very similar to the one used by a US Army Commo Sgt to win the
national Special Operations field radio competition a couple of years ago.
The good Sgt created quite a stir in the MilCom community by winning the
competition with an off the shelf Chinese radio that cost less than the
carrying case for many of the high dollar military radios in the
competition. The VHF/UHF radio will be a QYT 8900D feeding the hot new
Nagoya HDA antenna on a mag mount on my vehicle roof.
If you want to join me for a while during this event please let me know by
responding to this email. If you do plan to attend, dress comfortably and
bring water and a lawn chair. And of course please respect our host
church’s property by leaving it the way we found it.
