All,
During almost any notable disaster the challenge of spontaneous volunteers raises up it's head. (See e-mail below from Northern New Jersey Section Emergency Coordinator & ARRL HQ)
We're not talking about the examples of neighbor helping neighbor in the effected area during or right after a disaster occurs... we're talking of the "help" that is NOT asked for and just shows up at the scene or in the disaster area.
Unaffiliated volunteers or spontaneous volunteers that just show up in a disaster area can be a disaster to manager for emergency planners in the area. Most are turned away - FEW are ever are put to some kind of work. And they can add un-needed stress to the emergency planners and responders working in the area. In many cases the time and effort needed to sort through the spontaneous volunteers is more work than the benefit of their assistance.
As a reminder: ARES-OK members and Amateur Radio operators, are asked to NOT self deploy into disaster effected areas.

Subject: [sec:229] No call up form mutual assistance at this time.
Hello, Section Emergency Coordinators,
As a reminder to you – in case you receive inquiries -- and to all ARES members and Amateur Radio operators, please do not self deploy to areas that are experiencing emergencies or disasters.
George Sabbi, KC2GLC, the ARRL Section Emergency Coordinator for Northern New Jersey , responded to a rumor that was, apparently, circulating:
“Please Do Not Self Deploy
“There is NO general call up for any Mutual Aid amateur radio response into the ARRL NNJ Section at this time nor was such requested
Mutual Aid if needed will be coordinated through established channels using ARESMAT Protocols
Thank you in advance for your attention and concerns
George Sabbi - KC2GLG
