A question was recently asked by one of our ARES-OK OES about Digital Emergency Communications.
Below is how I answered the question - you might want to share with other HAMs in your area.
I appreciate your interest in digital communications, thanks for bringing this up.
ARES-OK is working toward promoting Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software (NBEMS). You can find very good info on the ARRL website (see link below). Take a look at the info on the ARRL site... this system works on any computer & any radio.

Introduction to NBEMS:
Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software (NBEMS) is an Open Source software suite that allows amateur radio operators to reliably send and receive data using nearly any computer (Windows, Mac, and Linux) and any analog radio without requiring a dedicated digital infrastructure or specialized modem hardware. NBEMS works on both VHF/UHF FM and on HF. In this presentation you will learn the basics of sending and receiving data using Fldigi. You will learn how to verify file transfers with Flwrap. You will see how to easily send and receive verified text messages using Flmsg. NBEMS is the standard digital emcomm package for Western PA ARES.
Once we get this going around the State and and there more folks practiced with NBEMS we can move toward a weekly Digital net(s) and then adding other exercises to the program (as well as including NBEMS into the SET each year).
