ARES Training HAMBOREE Saturday May 19th:
ARES, RACES and intrested HAMs are invited:
Tulsa area ARES is excited to announce our first ever Hamboree, coming
up quickly this Saturday, May 19. This is an all-day event that will
begin with training and seminars in the morning, followed by some
field work in the afternoon after lunch.
The event begins at the Auditorium of the Tulsa Central Library,
located in the Civic Center in downtown Tulsa, at 9:15 AM. After
introductions and an outline of the class schedules, we'll divide up
into smaller groups for short breakout sessions, lasting 15-20 minutes
each on a particular topic.
The tentative list of topics follows:
Guidelines for Tactical Nets
VHF/UHF Simplex Operations
The Day 1 Bag
Observations and Reporting from the Field
Paperwork During Activations
ARRL/FEMA EmComm Resources Overview
ARES on HF
ARES and RACES
Overview of the Roll Up J-Pole Antenna
During this time, we'll also be taking pictures to issue ARES ID cards
to new members or current members in need of a renewal.
After the breakout sessions, we'll break for lunch.
After lunch, the field exercise portion of the event begins. This
will be a combination of a Boy Scout Jamboree, a Scavenger Hunt, a
European Style Road Rally, and a Poker Run. Everyone will be given
directions to the first checkpoint along the route. Once at the
station, you'll have to perform a task. Upon successfully completing
the task, you'll get the instructions on how to find the next
checkpoint, and you'll also draw a card from a standard deck of
playing cards to keep as proof of successfully passing that
checkpoint. Please keep in mind, THIS IS NOT A RACE! We want you to
be safe as you travel to the various checkpoints, and there will be no
bonuses or extra credit for finishing sooner than others.
There will be a total of four checkpoints to visit. After completing
all four, returning to the Library will earn a fifth card. Your five
cards can then make a poker hand. Prizes will be available to those
with the top poker hands! Some of the prizes we've got lined up include:
- (3) $25 gift cards
- ARRL repeater directory
- ARRL EmComm 1 textbook
- ARES Resource Guide
This is the first time ARES in the Tulsa Area has put on an event like
this. I hope that there's something for everyone in the lineup of
classes in the morning, and I'm really looking forward to everyone
taking part in the field exercise in the afternoon!
Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or if
you'd like additional information. Hope to see everybody this Saturday!
