International Space Station Rendezvous with Dale Public Schools, Dale,
Oklahoma (February 7, 2006, 8:56 a.m.)
Under the guidance of Gary Burkhart, Dale High School Science Teacher, ten
selected students will be taking turns at a ham radio, asking questions and
discussing space travel, with Commander William “Bill” McArthur and Flight
Engineer Valery Tokarev, of Expedition Twelve on the International Space
Station. Commander McArthur will field questions from Casey Adams, Heather
Anderson, Michael Brinkley, Garrett Clinton, Justin Cochrane, Ashaley Crawford,
Trace Dilliner, Amanda Hazelton, Dakota Hopson, Caleb Parker, Kaylan Pickard,
and Ian Ramsey, as the remainder of the Dale School student body, faculty,
staff and residents of Dale, Oklahoma listen.
Five years ago Dale Public Schools made application through NASA, to
participate in an educational link with the ISS, after months of preparation and
four days of setting up the necessary antennas and equipment, the students
finally will talk, one on one with the crew of Expedition Twelve, of the
International Space Station. With the assistance of Keith Pugh a mentor from,
ARISS, Amateur Radio on the International Space Station, NASA’s Education Board,
and local ham operators, Ron Cochrane and Warren Rutherford, the students
will experience the thrill of participating in this historic event. Dale Public
Schools will become the “First” public school in the state of Oklahoma, to
link up with the ISS. The Tulsa Air and Space Museum made the only other
link from Oklahoma last year.
Dale Public Schools would appreciate your coverage of this historic event,
if you have any questions, please feel free to contact our volunteer press
coordinator, Ron Cochrane, at 405-990-7101.
