Space Station Contacts! Amateur Radio on the International Space Station
(ARISS)

The ISS was on cue as was the science students from Dale Public Schools!
A very successful Amateur Radio demonstration was completed on February 7.
The 9th grade science students were able to have good dialogue with the ISS
and clearly displayed the magic of Amateur Radio and how it plays into
science and technology. Ron Cochrane-KD5GEZ orchestrated the Amateur Radio effort.
Principal Harold Jones was elated with the Amateur Radio
accomplishment and feels it was a highly positive experience for this
school. The Dale School, which is near Oklahoma City, held a school wide assembly
for all students and faculty and included many parents. The assembly was
buzzing with excitement when the call for NA1SS was successfully answered. Thanks
to Keith Pugh-W5IU ARISS mentor for his support and presence. Also in
attendance were Coy-N5OK, West Gulf Division Director, John Thomason-WB5SYT Oklahoma
Section Manager and Joe Lynch-N6CL Past Oklahoma Section Manager. Several
electronic and printed media representatives were a part of the event.
.
Under the guidance of Gary Burkhart, Dale High School Science Teacher, the
ten selected students took turns at ham radio, asking questions and discussing
space travel, with Commander William "Bill" McArthur and Flight Engineer
Valery Tokarev, of Expedition Twelve on the International Space Station.
Commander McArthur fielded questions from Casey Adams, Heather Anderson, Michael
Brinkley, Garrett Clinton, Justin Cochrane, Ashaley Crawford, Trace Dilliner,
Amanda Hazelton, Dakota Hopson, Caleb Parker, Kaylan Pickard, and Ian Ramsey,
as the remainder of the Dale School student body, faculty, staff and residents
of Dale, Oklahoma listened.

NOAA Severe Weather Workshop March 2-4 in Midwest City
Amateur Radio operators, emergency managers and media members will have an
opportunity to exchange information and techniques for public safety during
severe weather with academia, federal government experts and themselves. This
has proven to be a fruitful activity for Amateur Radio operators. This years'
theme is Learning and Growing Together: Expanding Severe Weather Horizons.
Contact information is below in upcoming events.

WI5ND- Wagoner Wind Talkers School Club Roundup 2006!
Great event conducted by this Wagoner High School Amateur Radio Club. Many
thanks to Jeff-AF4CM, school instructor and club mentor as well as the
students for their continued solid Amateur Radio effort. AF4CM wrote the following
narrative about the activity.
>From Jeff Sharrock-AF4CM

"John [Thomason], thanks again for taking the time to work our club station
during SCR. Our tally should move us up from 6th this year. We finished with
401 QSOs after we scrubbed out the duplicates, 46 schools, 5 clubs, 5 DX
entities, 46 states, and worked the contest sponsor K2NRR for bonus points.
Whereas we had about 41,000 points and 207 QSOs last year, this year we
complied around 149,000 points. Amber Cones, the club QSL manager will be
BUSY.

Moreover, I think this event gained us at least three new members who saw
the station operate for the first time and want in on the action, and it has
prompted current members to pledge gaining licenses or upgrades by Field
Day. Woody Keech assures me he will be General Class.

Next week the club is going to spend money earned moving computers for the
school board on a new Icom 718. Gigaparts has a deal where we can get a free
DSP unit and $50 rebate if we buy by 31 March. I already donated an Astron
power supply to go with it, so by this spring our club station will own its
own station equipment, and there will be enough control operators to club
members to get on their air without my direct supervision.

Thanks again for your continued interest in the club's success

Ada Hamfest..good time by all!
Wow, what a neat gathering on February 11. Sure enjoyed all the effort by
Jeff-KC5ZQQ, Charles-KC5TGA and the Ada crew for, once again, putting together
a festive time in a comfortable setting. The cold wind was howling that day
in Pontotoc County. Had a room filled League forum with impressive networking
and a presentation by Ron-KD5GEZ on the ISS contact. Thanks to Ron for being
an impressive part of the forum. Appreciation to Jim-N5OHL, Section
Affiliated Club Coordinator, for bringing the group up to date on Section clubs. He
informed us that we now have 27 affiliated clubs in the Section. Well done
clubs! The latest addition is the club at the University of Oklahoma under the
guidance of Jud-W5JA.

Paula-AD5VL represented the Salvation Army in good order in discussing the
splendid newsletter. And, many of the Ada Hamfest attendees enjoyed the
Hamfest continuation at Bob's Barbecue. Some mighty large plates of lunch were
being served and consumed. Imagine this happening with a bunch of Amateur Radio
operators!
