I woudl doubt that this "Bill" has any hopes for success.
The next thing you konw is the government would restrict GPS reception!
Then it's on to taxing emails on the internet OH NOOOOOOOOO!

Nothing is free. It may appear that way to some that look directly at the product who benifit without direct renumoration. Somebody is paying somewhere!

1. The data is not "free". We the taxpayer payed for the development of the radars, and the effort expended to make the data useful.

2. The NWS and NCAR have developed most if not all of the software that makes the raw radar data useful to the end users, also at taxpayer expense, so they do have the capability to make the data useful to about any end user.

I must, therefore, respectfully disagree.

While I don't wish to take anything from the private vendors, in many cases
the essentially repackage exactly what the NWS provides for free. It's
inappropriate to make us pay for a simple repackaging.

However, where the private vendors have it all over the NWS is in tailored
products: they can provide products that are very specifically tailored to
a user's needs, which is something the NWS cannot do. Also, the private
vendors can provide all manner of additional products derived from the data
streams that the NWS does not, or can not, provide. Things like that *are*
worth paying for.

However, as written the bill is simply too broad.

"All of weather is divided into three parts: Yes, No, and Maybe. The
greatest of these is Maybe" The original Latin appears to be garbled.
