Greetings,
This weekend Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts worldwide will take to the Amateur
Radio airwaves in an annual event called Jamboree On The Air or simply JOTA. The
event takes place starting Saturday Oct 16th at 0001(Local) to Sunday, Oct
17th, 2359 (Local). JOTA has been a favorite scouting event for several years
in the Central Oklahoma Area. The event has spawned two Oklahoma Boy Scout
Troops to get own club calls (WA5BSA and WB5BSA)
JOTA will again be an opportunity for amateurs to talk with scouts on the air
about the hobby and maybe create a spark to encourage a youngster to get
licensed. There are opportunities for hams to volunteer time and equipment so the
scouts can get on the air.
I know of 2 locations where JOTA will be going to the field with scouts in
Central Oklahoma. If there are more in Oklahoma, we would like to know about
them and possibly arrange skeds. If you want to volunteer time, equipment, or
arrange skeds, feel free to contact me.
This is a great event and a substantial opportunity for Amateur Radio and the
Scouting programs in Oklahoma. I can attest to the value of the interaction
of scouts and hams for I was licensed in 1968 after attending a Radio Merit
Badge course.
