Greetings,
Do you know your local media contacts? Do you have a list of their phone
numbers, fax numbers, or e-mail addresses? There is a great source of this
information here in Oklahoma. It's the Oklahoma Media Guide. The guide is
published by the Oklahoma Press Service, Inc.. You may order the guide for
$25 by calling 1-888-815-2672, it's great tool every PIO or club public
relations chairman should have.
E-mail is a great way to keep in touch with the media. Anytime amateur radio
responds to an emergency (in Oklahoma or around the country), I have made it
a practice to pass in the information to the media via e-mail. I will cut
and paste notices sent from the ARRL and groups such as the SATERN or the
Hurricane Watch Net, them add my contact info to the e-mail. This keeps
amateur radio in the mind of the media and you just never know when they may
decide to do a story.
One such story resulted from an e-mail sent out when the Hurricane Watch Net
activated for Hurricane Isabel. The website link below will take you to a
windows media file of the KTUL TV8 (Tulsa ABC) news report that aired on the
10 p.m. news on 9/18/03.
