For Immediate Release
Tornado Memorial Station
Pryor --- Radio operators from around the area are scheduled to converge
on the Pryor City Park April 27 to operate Radio Station W5P as they
remember the anniversary of the Pryor Tornado and amateur radio
involvement in that disaster.
"In 1942, there was a radio blackout because of World War II," explained
Lloyd Colston, emergency management director for Mayes County and a radio
enthusiast. "However, the rules were waived so radio operators from
Muskogee could come to Pryor and set up a disaster radio station."
The American Radio Relay League has allowed the local radio club the use
of the W5P callsign. Members of the Mayes County Amateur Radio Club will
be on hand to explain disaster radio operations and distribute lifesaving
literature from the American Red Cross and the Mayes County Emergency
Management Office.
The April, 1942 tornado ranks in the top ten of the most deadly storms in
Oklahoma history. Thankfully, because of radio operators and technology,
lives and property are able to be saved today.
The local "hams" are involved in Emergency Management and Skywarn
activities, using their radios for public service.
