Ed thanks for the advice.

I suspect that nothing is broken as it worked fine
until the rig sat in a box in the basement for a couple of years and 
then the
PTO seized. I noticed that it was getting a little stiff at the bottom 
end of the
tuning range before the rig went into storage.

  I'll try the simple approach before I take on the task of rebuilding 
the
PTO.  I also read somewhere that Tri-Flow, which is a teflon-based 
Bicycle Lube, is
good for both removing the congealed grease and lubricating the PTO 
itself but I
wouldn't try this without removing the PTO mechanism as Tri-Flow is a 
liquid lube
not a grease.

P.S. If I do ultimately decide to rebuild the PTO I will document the 
process with my

so in the future.
