Message-ID: <238a9132-ec71-ca04-d39f-783cba780cb2@gmail.com> It is CFR 47 part 97 the horses mouth: http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?c=ecfr&SID=336ab7469b61ecbfa15086dbf1bf2c59&rgn=div5&view=text&node=47:5.0.1.1.6&idno=47#47:5.0.1.1.6.1.157.1 We only have to ID sooner than ten minutes into a QSO, then every 10 minutes (or less) and at the end of the QSO if you are going off the frequency or going QRT. There is a rule that we can only communicate with other licensed HAMs except for emergencies, some people have a knee jerk reaction to that requirement and they will not talk to anyone without hearing their call sign and some not without looking up the call sign on the internet. (usually using a blustering voice when they ask for your call sign - I have only heard this on HF as far as I can remember) Until about 40 years ago HAMs had to ID at the beginning and 10s and the end, but the rule was changed. Many HAMs continued that until death. That part of the rule was changed simply because it didn't make much sense in practical use. (few if anyone can catch an unknown call sign blurted out from silence) On a net with several operators you don't know that it will return to your turn again within 10 minutes so is it safe to ID before you let go. -- Ron KA4INM - Youvan's corollary: Every action results in unwanted side effects.
