Thanks Ron for the "heads up".
A few days ago Bernie mentioned the circuit for a cavity to allow the
control receiver on the Brandon repeater to be used on the main UHF
antenna. I built up a circuit up some months ago and it is ready
to install. The circuit was constructed from some old
Western Electric cavities that were originally used around 510 MHz.
Heaven only knows when and how I obtained them. Some internal
modifications were made to get them into the ham bands.
To give you a little history, the original control antenna was
mounted at about 8 ft. above ground and was very ineffective.
In addition to that, we had the feed line on the main repeaters
damaged and had to use the feed line for the control receiver
to get it back on the air. So instead of using the low antenna
again with poor performance, I decided to try to construct a filter
that will allow the UHF repeater and the control receiver to
operate on the same antenna while maintaining the effectiveness
of the main UHF repeater (and preventing the UHF transmitter
from frying the control receiver input circuit).
I plan on bringing the circuit with my spectrum analyzer for testing
the unit to the AREU meeting next Tuesday. When I explain the
operation and make some measurements, it will make me more
comfortable of the design. It always does. Maybe it will help others
in the group understand cavity filters and their value in communications
circuits.
Tony
