Next Tuesday (03/06/2007) is the first Tuesday of the month and therefore
the
March meeting of the Amateur Radio Electronics Union will gather at the Bell
Shoals Baptist Church. AREU as we call it is an informal group of amateur
radio operators (or anyone else interested in the electronics hobby) who
meet
monthly to share information on various electronic or electrical related
topics.
It has been in existenance for about 10 years and has slowly gained a solid
base of members.
The meeting is VERY informal and may consist of a formal presentation or
just a couple of hours of leisurely discussion of various topics.
More than likely there will be several discussion taking place and you may
join
any group you wish.
There have been some very good presentations given in past meetings such as
a comprehensive method of protecting your ham station from lightning damage
by Tom (K4PQD). Tom has had many years of design experience with the
construction of communications equipment and their associated towers.
Another
presentation about the habits and characteristics of lightning was presented
by
Ron (KA4INM). It was a real eye opener.
In addition there have been presentations on portable antenna construction
by
Rod (KC4MMR) which presented his work on a portable dipole similar to the
Buddipole. Ron's antenna is a great performer and he has worked up a
complete construction manual and parts list (including parts suppliers).
We have various boat anchor presentations, microwave equipment
demonstrations,
PSK tutorials, SSTV demos and tutorials, portable HF and VHF station demos,
and who knows what else. I can't even begin to remember the good times that
have been had at AREU meetings.
I think I will bring some equipment to demonstrate Lissajou patterns on an
oscilloscope. For an interesting demonstration of these patterns you can go
to : http://www.mathematik.ch/anwendungenmath/lissajou/lab/ for some groovy
displays.
Meeting starts at 7:00 PM with RC (rag chew) session and demonstrations will
begin
around 7:30 PM. It will not take long to show these patterns and Bob
(WB4AKA)
will be bringing a Webster Bandspanner mobile antenna for testing. I feel
pretty sure
there will be more to interest you.
The Church is located on the South West corner of Bell Shoals Rd. and
Overhill
Rd. This intersection is about 2 or 3 miles south of the Bell Shoals and
Lithia
Pinecrest Rd. intersection in South East Brandon. Just go to the
intersection of
Lithia Pinecrest road and Highway 60 in downtown Brandon and go South on
Lithia Pinecrest Rd. Go to the Lumsden Rd. Intersection and just after
passing
the Lumsden intersection on Lithia Pinecrest (only about 50 ft. so be ready
for
a right hand turn) turn right onto Bell Shoals Rd. Go about 2 or 3 miles to
Overhill
Rd. and turn right. The meeting room is in the old church building on your
left.
The double white doors to the right of the wrought iron gate is the entrance
to our
meeting room.
If you need further assistance the talk-in is on the Brandon VHF repeater
(147.165 MHz +, with a 136.5 Hz tone). Someone will be available to help
you.
