Hi everyone!

Well, its getting time again for another AREU meeting but first
you have to hear what you missed last month.

Last month’s meeting was a little different from the previous.
There were about 20 ham bones in attendance even a few of the
XYL persuasion. It’s nice to see the ladies getting interested.

Anyway, Tony, W4TAS, once again started off a discussion on a
thermal watt meter that he is currently building and
experimenting with. The topic took on a life of its own as
other members chimed in.

Then, in parallel with that continuing discussion, Walt, KI4EPN,
brought in his ICOM 735 HF transceiver that was exhibiting a bad
tuning knob problem. This is where I found the meeting really
got interesting. Tony, W4TAS, started to open up the tuning
mechanism and trouble shoot the problem for all to see. We were
not only able to see the mechanism in question but also saw how
to go about opening it up and putting it back together again. A
lot of times we hams talk a lot about a circuit and the
theoretical ins and outs of how it works and trouble shooting,
but this time we got to really see the nuts and bolts taken off
and apart and the theory shown in practice before us. Seeing
the tiny optical sensors and the rotating disk that triggers the
tuning behind that knob that you turn to tune in different
frequencies gives me a lot better feel and understanding of what
is going on in the radio. And, a whole lot better understanding
of what to do when it doesn't’t act right. This example was
especially useful considering all the optical tuners that have
in a lot of our radios now days.

So, that’s what you missed last month, but coming up next month
will start off with calibrating a thermal watt meter. I hear
Ron, KA4INM, is going to be bringing in some commercial
equipment so we can make some equipment comparisons.

Mark your calenders for Tuesday November 7th. If you can’t
remember that day just remember it also falls on voting day.
Vote early and then come to the meeting afterwords.

See you all there.
