Next Tuesday (October 03, 2006) is the next meeting of the Amateur Radio
Electronics Union
at the Bell Shoals Baptist Church. As you probably know, AREU is a technical
group that meets
the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM or thereabouts. We have no dues,
no officers, just a lot
of talk and demonstrations of electronic equipment, theory and personal
experiences. It is usually
a learning and fun-filled experience.

AREU has existed for about 10 years now and has attracted more and more
folks every month.

This month I will talk about calorimic power measurement and I have
constructed a wattmeter
sensing element to demonstrate the principle. The unit will measure RMS
power from DC to above
10 GHZ. The only problem (if it really is a problem) is the full scale watts
are 0.1. Attenuators
can be used ahead of the unit to measure any amount of power you desire.
I may not have the entire unit finished by meeting time but I have the
sensing element completed
now and will bring it along for show and tell. Just for grins I tested it
today and it puts out about
348 microvolts per milliwatt. That's not bad if you have some fairly good
operational amplifiers
to bring this up to a usable level.

If you have any interesting equipment or would like to give a presentation
on any topic related to
electronics or communications please let me know via my personal E-Mail
which is:

If you don't know the whereabouts of the church just send me a note and I'll
get you the
directions. If you experience any disorientation during your trip to the
meeting just call
on the Brandon VHF repeater (147.265 +, 136.5 Hz tone). We will put you on
the
correct path.

I don't know what else is planned for the meeting but I'm sure someone will
come up with
something interesting in addition to my presentation.
