[AReU] At our January meeting:

Part of the time, at our last AReU meeting I was over in the corner with Lou KI4ILP
Pomales working on an antenna situation that we had been talking about, it wasn’t a
private demonstration that we were keeping from anyone, it ended without resolution, as
neither the refrigerator or range (acting as a counterpoise for three 2 meter “mag mounts”
antennas under test) didn’t act like a car did (for just me) a month earlier.
Lou mentioned that his antenna (under test) was sold to him as a dual band antenna, (2
m/70 cm) I had to tell him it isn’t. Beside my sweeping it with a return loss bridge,
there is a simple way to tell.
Generally, if on a simple vertical (or twice on a dipole) the basic element is an
even number of quarter wave lengths at a frequency in question, it will work more
efficiency, but if it is an odd number of quarter wave lengths it will not be on your team.
It will be very inefficient, but you still be able to get into a repeater or two, but the
transmitter will see a bad load, which is to be avoided.
In this case a 18 or 19 inch whip is nearer to being three 6 inches than to two or four
6 inches. (6 inches is about 1/4 wl at 440 mHz) Being an even number of wl’s at your
frequency doesn’t mean that it will be a good load for the transmission line, just an
efficient radiator, a matching system is usually needed to couple to most non-simple
non-1/4 wl antennas to the line.

Because I accidentally sent out my more or less typical meeting notice a week early, I
sent out two more one to straighten out the “next week” thing, when it was actually
“Tuesday week.” (The Southern way of saying Tuesday after next.) And another mostly for
good measure, it was the "tonight" one. This MIGHT have been responsible for 22 persons
out and out admitting that they were at the meeting by signing (or otherwise making a
mark) on our roster “sign up” sheet. Instead of flooding everyone with tons of notices
every month, I am planing on setting myself up a calendar or something to remind me
appropriately when to to post `the meeting notice' and I will consider posting two meeting
notices each month and we will see how that works out.

Our January meeting was Ed Hohenthaner’s last meeting for some time, as he has taken
the short step off of the long cliff and moved to Tennessee for several reasons. This
location, which is supposed to be very gud for DXing from, is about half way closer to his
number one son that lives in Michigan, than here, and he visits with him often. I tried
to tell him the mixture of the “white stuff” and hills is not a gud one, but he won’t
listen to me. (actually no one listens to me, but I digress)
We all wish Ed and Jean the very best up yonder, (and everywhere) and in gud sunspot
times he promises to get in on the BARS’s 10 meter HF net. Roy WB4RBB has in the past
and W7LGD promises to give it a big try. (He’s talking mono band beam!)
Ed hasn’t sold his Dover property yet, so he will most likely have to make a return
visit or two before his ownership ties with this area completely are completely cut.
