First of all, I want to apologize for lagging behind in my E-Mails to the
reflector lately. I have been working to network the computers in the house
for some time now and I have really concentrated on it in the last couple of
weeks. I have "sort of" made it! My central computer in the network
"crashed" just as I was talking to the Microsoft networking folks about my
problems. With their help, I finally got the other two (my ham computer and
Pat's computer) networked together and working fine. I am still having
trouble with printer sharing but that is a small problem. I hope to get the
main machine back on line soon. I am using the old 166 MHz machine now and,
although it has served me in fine style for about 6 years, it now seems
painfully slow compared to the more recent machines. It is also on the ham
bench and it strains my neck to look at the screen. I will use it for
satellite tracking, SSTV, PSK31 and other digital modes when everything is
up and running as I originally planned.
More to the point, the next meeting of AREU is next Tuesday. I purchased
some stuff at Dayton that I will bring. One of the items is a 1.0 to 2.5 GHZ
free running oscillator with about 50 milliwatts output. It is perfectly
useless for anything but is pretty neat to watch it operate. I also
purchased some circulators for the 2.3 GHz range that I will bring as well
as a frequency tripler and a mixer module. Ed, Mike and I will have some
great stories to tell about the Dayton Hamvention and our grueling trip
there and back. We saw some good friends that we had not seen in a while and
experienced the absolutely humbling map of the tailgate area. We roamed for
two days and did not see it all.
The AO40 satellite is operating again but it will not be available for the
AREU meeting next Tuesday. It will however be in good shape this Saturday
morning from 0700 until 1100 EST. The squints will be low and the distances
will be low also. It will be perfect for trying your uplink if you don't
have much power.
If anyone needs a printout of the saturday pass just let me know.
