A number of you expressed interest in the homebrew travel antenna I
showed at Saturday morning's antenna test at Davis Park. It's made of
easily obtainable materials, and covers 40 -10 meters utilizing a center
loaded coil (with an adjustable tap) and an adjustable whip. Its main
claim to fame, however, is the fact that it breaks down into pieces no
longer than 2 feet in length, making it ideal for portable operation.
The antenna construction project, authored by Pail Salas AD5X, is
described in the July 2002 issue of QST, beginning on page 28. All the
parts can be obtained at Home Depot or Lowe's and Radio Shack, with
exception of the loading coil which can be purchased via the web at
Surplus Sales of Nebraska for $15.00 plus shipping. The price, there,
is half of what B&W wants on their web site. I should note the B&W
model number of the coil given in the article is incorrect. It should
be number 3027, not 4027. Just as a cross check, make sure the coil you
order is 2" diameter x 10" length, 10 turns per inch, 16 gauge, 92 micro
Henrys.
It appears I will be unable to attend Field Day, with the Brandon group,
this year because I will be in North Carolina. However, I plan on
taking the portable antenna discussed above with me and hope to make a
contact with you on one of the HF bands.
Have fun. If any of you would like to discuss the above project, please
give me a call at the numbers below or drop me an e-mail to the return
address.
