[AReU]
(for years) My/our friend Tony W4TAS and I have been discussing something
that he as observed and I haven't, I keep asking him why it would occur.
At our last [AReU] meeting he pointed out something that makes sense to me.
We have been talking about troubles that can occur from keeping a car
battery on the output of our 12 Volt (13.8 V dc) power supply, typically
to run our base HF radios. (20+ amp load and power supply)
Tony pointed out: if the power supply has an `over Voltage protection
circuit' with an SCR that `fires' to short out the supply's output when
an over voltage condition is detected, a "CROW BAR" circuit, (mine does not)
and the SCR is fired for any reason, the SCR will short out the `700 cold
cranking Amps' battery, you will view this as an explosion within the
power supply. My remedy is to fuse the power supply or battery or both.
Your RADIO is fused, right?
I have chosen to install [solder in] a 30 Amp. "Littlefuse" brand {self
resetting} circuit breaker P/N 0ACB030 a replacement for the GM# 1252240
in the positive leads, IN the power supply and battery's cable.
I get these at "discount Auto Parts" for $ 1.99 + tax, be careful, right
next to these are the same thing with longer `blades' for a dollar more.
(which I would cut off)
After the solder cools, I cover the connections with silicone sealer to
prevents accidents.
