Nice story Mike.  Makes on appreciate the pioneers that came before us.

Digging through some old Ham gear in a consignment shop a bunch of years
ago, I found the J-38 that I had learned Morse with.  On the bottom of the
wood plate that it's bolted to, is the callsign of Bob Kastle - K4TQW and
that of his brother.  Bob and his brother who lived in Akron OH. used to
talk each and every day on HF.  Bob's brother died unexpectedly many years
before him and Hamming was never the same for Bob.  Bob's sister-in-law
shipped Bob his brother's J-38 to him.

More than one time I've thought about grabbing Bob's old callsign.
