My NVIS experience is limited to eight days in Honduras this February, where we used 40M SSB for contact with stations 20-200 miles apart. It worked well, as long as the sun was up. After local sunset, it was not usable. Most antennas were G5RV Junior, up 10-15 feet, and driven by 100W transmitters. NVIS work is frequency dependent, must be below the MUF, and the D-layer absorption may prohibit using 75M during daylight.
