George,
I think you're referring to what they call Roll Pins for the PowerPoles.
Check this link for further information:
http://www.westmountainradio.com/optipsrr.htm
(scroll down a bit to the section "Do Not Use Roll Pins on PowerPoles!")
Most PowerPole users do not use the roll pin as it is not necessary in most
instances. The friction-fit between the red/black connectors is usually
enough to keep them together. If you use the Roll Pins and they fall out,
it is possible they can fall into equipment and cause a short circuit.

All:
Anyone have any problems with the driftpin that holds the two connectors
together? I have had that problem with one pair. Using a cable tie to keep
the two together. I am switching stuff that is likely to be used for ARES to
Power Poles because of the current trend.
For my hilltopping, camping and personal field/home applications, I much
prefer a twist lock connector. I use the Bryant made for 125 V 15 A service.
The connectors have a polarized plug, so they can only go together one way.
I use these with a 150 W amplifier as well. the demand from the amplifier is
approx. 20 amps when in FM mode. The contact surface area combined with the
lower voltage is likely the reason this is not an is not an issue. The
twist lock always provides a good solid connection. Depending on
application, Power Poles could separate (lower current models). The high
current models (Power Pole) provide a much more positive connection.
For ultimate reliability under all conditions, I would look to marine
service type connectors.
Happy Holidays and 73

not have an agreement on what 12 volt power connectors we all should be
using. ARRL recommends a Molex 1545 which no one is using due to
availability. What is being used are Radio Shack 274-222's, Radio Shack
274-151's and Anderson Powerpole connectors. To see pictures of these
connectors go to www.mcares.org and click on the Connector Discussion link
on the left of the page.

Has anyone had problems with Molex 1545's?
