Just a quick comment to this excellent discussion that has gotten me
to dig out and connect MY packet gear...

Windows is generally to unstable (prone to crash) and is subject to
assault by virus files of many kinds, making it unsuitable for any
mission-critical use. Unix and it's free variant, Linux are really
the only way to go if you want a computer that keeps running at all
times.

That's why NASA uses Linux on all of the laptops on the space shuttle
and in the International Space Station. That's why the United States
Postal Service uses Linux on the mail sorting machines and that's why
IBM now runs Linux on their mainframes,

Anyone who works with system that must not crash ever knows the power
of Linux. Linux does not crash - but it is a little hard to learn
compared to Windows.

For Packet work, the nice thing about Linux is that there are ample
DOS emulators that run on top of linux. You can run AREAS DOS
programs on Linux. That means you won't be sitting there waiting for
your computer to reboot while messages pile up.

Most ham radio operators will be able to learn the basics of Linux in
about a week. There are several "flavors" of Linux, and the one I'd
suggest if you want to learn it is "Mandrake" linux. You can buy the
CD in a store just about anywhere. You can also ger Red Hat Linux
packages.

Also, Apple's new OS X (pronounced Oh Ess Ten) is based on type of
Unix, and it to does not crash and is not prone to catching viruses.
You CAN run DOS and Windows programs on a Mac with the addition of a
program called Virtual PC.

Just some thoughts on the subject.
