This is the analysis that we have to make.
Several years ago, a promoter came up with a plan to stage a sports car
race through the streets of downtown Columbus, Ohio. The promoter wrote a
line into his budget to cover a donation to a local charity. He then
structured his income and expenses to make a profit over and above the
charitable donation. The charitable organization received top billing in
event advertising and promotion, but this clearly was not a charitable event.
On the other hand, if a charitable organization hires a promotional company
to stage an event for them, it's assumed the promoter makes a profit on his
fee and the organization keeps whatever is left over after paying the fee.
To me, this is more clearly a charitable event.
