Mark,
I understand your point, but if the foundation has its own charter and a
501(c)(3) status, then by law, they're required to stick to their legal
charter, whether that be for research, education, etc. There are probably a
bunch of companies that have separate foundations that receive donations,
and pass out grants. Companies like HP, Sprint, to name a couple. HP and
Sprint are for-profit corporations, but their foundations are separate.
Maybe the event coordination is a part of Avon's administrative costs, that
in order to organize such a large event, they had to contract the work out
to a for-profit company to organize it. Conceptually, that'd be no
different than, say, United Way or the MS Society, renting out a banquet
room at a for-profit Hilton Hotel, or hiring a for-profit caterer to provide
food for a fund-raiser. Some services just have to be provided by a
for-profit company.
And, as Marlo states, hams are their for the benefit of the participants,
who are raising money for the non-profit foundation.
But, as with any of these public service events, we each have to make our
own decisions to support or not, based on whatever information we have or
don't have. I'm sure you'll decide what's best for your group.
