The “ARC-5” in Montgomery’s personal B-17 (not a British made aircraft or more than likely C-47 ?) was more than likely an SCR-274-N set, and not an AN/ARC-5 set. While a few ATA/ARA and AN/ARC-5 sets were used in a very few USAAF multi-engined aircraft, the SCR-274-N was standard USAAF issue until late in WW2, and if Montgomery’s B-17 (?) was transferred from USAAF stocks, it would have more than likely have been been equipped with the SCR-274-N.  If the aircraft came out of RN or RAF stocks, the radio would have been British or Commonwealth made.  The ATA/ARA and AN/ARC-5 radios, made by Aircraft Radio Corporation, were more of a US Navy issued radio.

Anything that looks remotely like an AN/ARC-5 is referred to as such in the vernacular.
See it all the time on Ebay, only to find out that it's a BC-***.

The AN/ system was valid in WW2 years, but it seems to have been abandoned now; am i right ?

I mean, “ Army – Navy / “ would no longer seem to have any purpose ?

Kind of a pet peeve of mine,  and I'm not picking on Leslie (thank you for the picture).

There never was an ARC-5.   There was an AN/ARC-5, an SCR-274N, and ATA-ARA.    Of course, we all use ARC-5 in a generic term and hopefully the context makes the actual meaning clear.......   Going for my first cup of coffee now.....
