I have seen a photo of the Bell Aircobra with an SCR-522 visible right behind the pilot's back. In such case likely no add'l HF gear was carried. 

When i was in H.S. still, this was decades ago, there was a tool rental business in Lynnwood WA on Hwy. 99. The store had above it on the roof a military training plane, a small monoplane, single engine, 1 or 2 place. The owner's son brought into electronics class the radio receiver from the plane: one Command set.
