It's a sorta standard R-24/ARC-5 receiver.   Its original purpose has been mentioned a number of times over the years, which was to provide an audio output for the Navy ZB-* series carrier homing receiver where the aircraft did not already have another receiver with the capability.  (The USAAF used the BC-946, of course.  All that wrinkle paint for salt spray protection was expensive!)  For those who love such minutia, see https://aafradio.org/garajmahal/ARC-5_loop_control_knobs.html for a review of the loop control knobs for the loop antenna on the two AN/ARC-5 receivers.

I never saw one of those (ARC?) broadcast receivers with the loop option.
That's a rare beast.
The Arc beacon receivers all had the loop option. I've seen lots of those.

Gang,

Recent discussion of CBY-46145 and BC-946B bring to mind my experience with R-24/ARC-5 as a BCB DX receiver.

Here's my log from our radio club's DX contest back in 2012:

Sadly, YVKS  has been QRT for a while now.

95% of the time you'll bemuch  better off with a tuned loop rather than a wire antenna.
