To answer people's questions (in no particular order......)

Yes I plan to do an alignment.   I have a signal generator and scope (of course.....)

Yes, that's how the AM BCB sounds here.

Spent some time tonight trying to secure that bent antenna terminal.   Had to be very careful as there is almost no room to fix the connection if it breaks behind the front panel;  I had to use a very slender needle-nose pliers to crank the nut down as best I could.    The connector still isn't straight, but it's snug.

There's complete instructions on alignment via original manual material for the 946B. I did mine & it was a cinch. Putting all the case screws was more tedious. LOL

I would first check the tracking as it is. Old school method is to use a frequency meter or tune in AM broadcasters.
