Colleagues,
I'd like to ask for help to identify the type of the L-shaped antenna
used on the early U-2 airplanes. I presume that it was the A.R.C. Type
A-15 VHF antenna inside an aerodynamic fairing since the A.R.C. Type 12
VHF COM is known to have been used on such birds. On the prototype
aircraft, the L-shaped antenna was mounted just under the cockpit, while
the later production aircraft had the antenna moved toward the center
part of the fuselage. Later, the A.R.C. Type 12 was removed from the
U-2s and replaced with the AN/ARC-34 UHF.
