The Hakko solder sucking gun is a worthwhile investment.  Now that I have one I kick myself for not investing in one earlier.  Got mine about 8 yrs ago.

There are knock-offs now that are much cheaper.  I don't know how well they work but the principle is the same.  Whatever you buy makes sure you get a tip with a large hole while you will need for vintage joints.  Some come with a tip that is optimized for PC boards.  BTW, these things are great for PCBs.
