I have mentioned this before, but maybe still appropriate: my friend Greg had a BC-639 VHF receiver. He had it on a regulated variable B+ supply. At normal B voltage, it emitted smoke, but when you dialled the B+ down to say 180 or 200 jolts, the smoke immediately ceased and receiver worked fine. No VOM was needed; as the saying goes, "Adjust for minimum smoke".
