Not sure if anyone might be interested but I have a 1948 aeronautical chart with the numerous LF stations depicted. No VOR  no TACAN, no nothing except LF. Additionally, I have an Air Force navigators training manual that depicts "orienteering" via these LF stations. All I can say is a picture is worth 1000 words. When one sees the layout, it becomes genuinly clear how it works. As someone pointed out, however, range from the station cannot be easily determined.  Unless you have a lot of fuel.....
