I have a field letter from Trans Continental & Western Airlines which directs stations to send defective BC-348 receivers to KC repair shops. Also,  If one looks at Esse, and others, ads in CQ magazine in the late 40's, there are ads for BC-348s "ready for airline use."  K3HVG

This explains the professionally done modified BC-348 I have.
We have the "Who" and the "What", but the question remains, "Why?"
Was this to explore civilian marketing of usable war surplus radios?
So apparently 'Air Assets Inc.', whatever that was, contracted with the 'War Assets Corporation' to manage disposal of resources.
I think I have some docs that talk about another company, some actual name company we would recognize, also cataloging and offering surplus equipment.
My take is, this system failed for some reason and then it was "Everyone welcome to bid on these lots".
